5G Technology in India: Implementation, Bands, and Future 6G Roadmap

5G cellular networks are transforming communication speed and capacity in India. Explore the key frequency bands and the roadmap to 6G.

5G is the fifth generation of cellular network technology, succeeding 4G LTE. It provides higher data speed, lower latency (response time), and the capacity to connect millions of devices simultaneously. In India, 5G services were officially launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in October 2022. Jio and Airtel have since deployed standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) 5G networks across the country.

5G operates in three main frequency bands: Low-band (under 1 GHz, broad coverage but lower speeds), Mid-band (1 to 6 GHz, balanced speed and range), and High-band (millimeter wave or mmWave, 24 GHz and above, ultra-fast speeds but very short range). While 5G adoption is scaling, the Indian Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has already established the 'Bharat 6G Alliance' to drive research into 6G technology, aiming for deployment by 2030.

Exam Insights & GK Analysis:

Radio waves used in 5G and 6G belong to the electromagnetic spectrum. The regulatory body for telecom services in India is the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), established in 1997. C-Band (3.3 GHz to 3.6 GHz) was the primary mid-band auctioned in India for 5G deployment.
