Introduction to Operating Systems: Functions, Types, and Key Concepts

An Operating System (OS) is a system software that acts as an interface between a computer user and computer hardware. It performs basic tasks such as file management, memory management, process management, handling input and output, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers. Common operating systems include Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS.

From an architecture perspective, the core of any operating system is the kernel, which stays in main memory and directly interacts with hardware. Operating systems can be classified into various types based on execution: Batch OS, Multi-programming OS, Time-sharing OS, Real-time OS (RTOS), and Distributed OS. Modern systems use GUI (Graphical User Interface) rather than CLI (Command Line Interface) to interact with users.
