Nagalimi Cattle: Nagaland's Third Indigenous Breed Registered Nationally

Nagaland has marked another significant achievement in animal husbandry with the official registration of 'Nagalimi' cattle as an indigenous breed in India. This marks the third indigenous animal breed from Nagaland to receive national recognition, following the Nagaland Pig and Tenyi Vo (sheep) breeds. The Nagalimi cattle breed is primarily found in the districts of Dimapur, Kohima, Wokha, Peren, and Zunheboto. These cattle are characterized by their small stature, hardiness, and exceptional adaptability to local environmental conditions. The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), an institute under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), is responsible for identifying and registering such indigenous breeds, playing a crucial role in their conservation and enhancement.
